Course Goals (acquired competencies): Practical and applicable aspects of the design, analysis and detection process for gigabit wireless local area networks in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 60 GHz frequency range. Acquiring the skills for selecting network equipment, communication standards and configuration of wireless network equipment depending on the expected performance, at all layers of the ISO/OSI reference model.
Course Syllabus: Standardization bodies (IEEE, IETF, ITU-R). Standards (Formal and Informal). Standardization process. Brief introduction and verification of practical knowledge in the field of wireless/radio communications. Electromagnetic waves, radio frequency. Analog and digital modulation techniques. Carrier. Propagation effects and their impact on the wireless link performance. Budgeting Wireless Links. Gains, Losses (from propagation, shadowing, interference). System Operational Margin (SOP). Antennas and aerial configurations. Adaptive antenna systems (Beamforming). The capacity of the wireless link. Information and code rate. Bandwidth and Channel. Multi-carrier wireless transmission. Introduction to OFDM. Calculation of OFDM parameters and achievement of gigabit performance. MIMO-OFDM. IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ad (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 60 GHz). IEEE 802.15.3c. Interoperability between different standards for wireless local area networks. Topology. Access Control - MAC level in 802.11/802.15 networks. Basic service set (BSS, IBSS, ESS). Techniques for delivering security to local and personal wireless networks. Roaming in wireless local area networks. Design process: Analysis and complexity of the environment (physical and virtual). Tools. Techniques for selecting channels and reducing interference. Performance testing. 802.11T (Wireless Performance Prediction). 802.11u - (Wireless Internetworking with External Networks - WIEN). Infrastructure hardware and software. Troubleshooting techniques for wireless network configurations - Approach: Symptom, diagnosis, solution. Design and analysis tools.
