Course Goals (acquired competencies): By completing this course, the student acquires knowledge about the impact of the  electric power facilities operation on the environment. It is trained in the preparation of analyzes and studies for ensuring sustainable energy development and operation of power facilities in accordance with environmental standards and ecological requirements.

Course Syllabus: Production of electricity from different technologies and their impact on the environment. Atmospheric and geological composition. Types of fossil fuels and their chemical content. Impact of the fossil fired thermal power plant on the environment. Solid waste (ash) and gas emissions (nitrogen, sulfur and carbon oxides) from TPP operation. Greenhouse effect (GHG) and ozone layer of meaning to life on earth. Technologies  for generating electricity. Technologies for reduction of emissions of the TPP fossil fuels and their economic evaluation of the plant operation and electricity outcome price. Assessing the economic needs of external costs. Simulation work on different technologies of electricity production on the environment. Impact of the nuclear power plant operation on environment. Classification of radioactive waste and ways to address them. Low and high radiological waste treatment  Effects of the hydroelectric power plants on the environment and evaluate the effects of disruption of bio cycle,  locally and globally. Sustainable energy development. Quantification of the risk on the man’s life and environment from power plant facilities .
