RES Integration in Power Systems
Course: RES Integration in Power Systems
Code: 3ФЕИТ09003
ECTS points: 6 ECTS
Number of classes per week: 3+0+0+3
Lecturer: Asst. Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Krkoleva Mateska
Course Goals (acquired competencies): Capability to assess the benefits and problems related to integration of renewable energy sources (RES) and dispersed generation (DG) in power systems. Capability to perform relatively simple analyses of connection of RES units and their impact on power grids.
Course Syllabus: 1. Introduction to integration of RES in power systems. Introduction of terms - power system, transmission and distribution of electricity; overview of RES technologies for electricity; RES power units integration; DG in power systems; share of RES in electricity production. 2. Connection of RES units to transmission grids. Overview of European developments. Problems related to RES integration - impact on frequency and reliability. Possibilities for RES units to participate in ancillary services. Analyses by making use of available software packages. 3. Problems of DG integration. Overview of European developments. Impact of DG on distribution systems. Analyses of distribution systems with DG. Software applications for analyses of distribution systems with DG. 4. New concepts in power systems. Smart Grids. Technologies o transmission level. Technologies on distribution level. Possibilities to facilitate RES integration within the new concepts. Virtual power plant concept. Microgrids concept.
