Course Goals (acquired competencies): To get a knowledge  with the basic principles of the operation of solar cells as direct converters of solar energy in electrical and their characteristics. The student is able to recognize the efficient solar cells and panels, get a knowledge in production of solar cells and how to increase their efficiency.

Course Syllabus: Introduction. Photovoltaic effect. Light apsorption in semiconductors. Solar cells function. Types of solar cells. Equivalent circuit. Volt-current characteristic. Characteristic of real solar cell. Measurement of characteristics of the cells. Efficiency of solar cell. Impact factors on efficiency of solar cell. Dependency of the efficiency on the semiconductor band gap. Concept for improving the efficiency. New materials solar cells. Nanostructure thin film solar cells. Photovoltaic power plants. Vision for the future.
