ECTS points: 6 ECTS

Number of classes per week: 3+0+0+3

Lecturers: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vladimir Atanasovski, Asst. Prof. Dr. Valentin Rakovikj

Course Goals (acquired competencies): Acquainting with the notions of nanomachines networking, intra and inter-cell signalling and creation of nanonetworks. Understanding the differences between traditional and molecular communications. Ability to work on research in the area.

Course Syllabus: Notion of nanomachines. Development approaches to nanomachines. Expected characteristics. Cell signalling. Molecular transceivers. Architecture of nanomachines. Interconnection of nanomachines. Techniques for communication between nanomachines based on nanowired communications, wireless optical communications and molecular communications. Notion of nanonetworks. Characteristics and components of nanonetworks. Types of nanonetworks. Comparison with traditional communication networks. Short-range (based on molecular motors) and long-range (based on pheromones) nanonetworks. Information capacity from an information theory viewpoint. Channel modelling for different types of nanonetworks. Protocols for nanonetworks. Applications for nanonetworks. Simulation tools for nanonetworks. Research challenges in the area (development of network components, molecular communication theory, new architectures and protocols).
