ECTS points: 6 ECTS

Number of classes per week: 3+0+0+3

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Venceslav Kafedjiski

Course Goals (acquired competencies): Upon completing the course, it is expected that the student will know the modern transmission techniques used by the current and future wireless systems for person to person communication and machine to machine communication, and to be capable of researching in the the area of wireless communications and wireless systems.

Course Syllabus: Wireless channels. Transmission techniques used by modern wireless systems. Spread spectrum systems. OFDM. MIMO. Multiple access techniques. CDMA. OFDMA. Multiuser MIMO systems. Relay systems.  Cooperative communications with coordinated transmission and reception. Interference management. Multiuser and network MIMO systems. Device coordination (eg. using drones to establish a flexible network). 5G mobile systems. Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN). Novel transmission techniques in 5G: new modulation techniques, non-orthogonal multiple access, massive MIMO systems, Device to Device (D2D) communication, millimeter waves, full duplex transmission, small cells, content caching. Transmission techniques for Internet of Things (IoT) and machine to machine communication (M2M).  Standardization activities in ETSI, ITU and IEEE.
