Next Generation Optical Networks
Course: Next Generation Optical Networks
Code: 3ФЕИТ10028
ECTS points: 6 ECTS
Number of classes per week: 3+0+0+3
Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Borislav Popovski
Course Goals (acquired competencies): Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to know the advanced concepts and protocols in the optical networks, apply them to the existing and future telecommunication systems, be competent for the design of optical networks and their implementation, and are capable of carrying out scientific and research work in the field on optical networks.
Course Syllabus: Enabling technologies for optical networks. Client optical networks: IP, MPLS, GMPLS, Gigabit-Ethernet (GE), Storage-Area Networks (SAN). Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Networks. Optical layer, wavelength conversion, routing and wavelength assignment (RWA), light path design (LTD), QoS, traffic models. OTN standard. Routing and Spectrum Assignment for Elastic Optical Networks. Software-Defined Networking (SDN). Control and management of optical networks, performance and fault management, configuration management. Network survivability. Photonic switching, Optical Burst Switching (OBS), Optical Packet Switching (OPS). Access networks: HFC, FTTH, FTTC. Passive optical networks (PON). EPON, GPON, WPON, WRPON. TDMA and WDMA access. Implementation. Intelligent optical transport systems (on-board automotive networks, aeronautics). Optical networks for distributed antenna systems. Optical wireless systems.
