Course Goals (acquired competencies): Ability to perform analytical, numerical and simulation modeling of optical links and their components; performance analysis of various optical inter-connects and their application. Readiness for research in these areas.

Course Syllabus: Types of optical interconnects and architecture optical communication links. Application of optical interconnects in WAN/MAN/LAN/SAN (out-of-the-box); system/board/modul/chip (in-the-box).  Challenges in higher speed optical links (100 Gb/s, 1Tb/s, …). Laser electric field modeling. Modal power distribution in multimode fibers. Optical receiver modeling. Light propagation models in optical medium. Optical medium transfer function. Connectors: transfer matrices, attenuation, mode mixing, influence of lateral and angular offset. Numerical and simulation models for optical links. Optical link performance analysis. Nonlinear phenomena. Rectangular optical waveguides: characteristics and applications. Pol characteristics and applications characteristics and applications. Integrated optical interconnects.
