Course: Design for Compliance with Standards - PFC & EMC
Code: 3ФЕИТ05021
ECTS points: 6 ECTS
Number of classes per week: 3+0+0+3
Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Goce Stefanov, Asst. Prof. Tomislav Kartalov
Course Goals (acquired competencies): Gaining basic knowledge and understanding of the possible electromagnetic interference sources in power electronic converters, its effects on other circuits, standards and regulations, and methods for power factor correction and electromagnetic compatibility. Acquiring competence and skills to design and test power converters in compliance with standards and regulations.
Course Syllabus: Low frequency harmonics and power factor correction (PFC), standards for low frequency harmonics, definitions, harmonics calculation, international regulations, power management. Passive solutions for PFC, topological configurations, design guidelines, size and weight, reliability issues. Active Solutions for PFC, main features, applicable topologies (with and without isolation), control strategies, losses calculation, loop design. PFC topologies, boost (plus ZVT), flyback, SEPIC. Current trends in PFC, PFC in one stage, parallel energy processing, bidirectional converters, series pre and post regulators. Power Factor Correction in 3F, passive solutions, active solutions, topologies. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), basic electromagnetic principles, EMC requirements for electronic systems, nonideal behavior of components, radiated noise and susceptibility, conducted noise, grounding, shielding, EMI in switched mode power supplies (SMPS), intrinsic noise sources.
