Course Goals (acquired competencies): By successfully completing this course, the candidate will acquire the competencies for modeling various types of control systems for electric drives with different types of electric motors and their analysis for stationary and dynamic conditions.

Course Syllabus: Access to the theory of state vectors. Stationary and dynamic conditions of drives with asynchronous machines. Stationary and dynamic conditions of drives with synchronous machines. Stationary and dynamic conditions of drives with direct current machines. Comparison of DC and AC electric motors. Voltage inverters. Inverter with pulse width modulation. Current inverters. High performance drives and general-purpose drives. Vector control and field oriented control. DC machine torque control. Vector control of synchronous machine. Stationary d, q model of synchronous machine. Synchronous machines torque control. Dynamics of synchronous machine with vector control and field oriented control. Brushless DC machines. Vector control of asynchronous machine in a stationary condition. Asynchronous machine dynamics with field oriented control. Indirect controllers. Direct controllers. Using the flux in the air gap. Current regulation in energy converters. Models for small signals. Observers and estimators.
