Course Goals (acquired competencies): Gaining basic knowledge and understanding of the principles of operation of  power semiconductor devices, power efficiency, topologies and parameters of four types of electric power conversion circuits. Acquiring competence and skills for analyzing the operation of power conversion electronic circuits, as well as solving practical application electronic circuit examples.

Course Syllabus: Power Semiconductor Devices: Classification of semiconductor power electronics devices, basic semiconductor physics, power diodes, Schottky diodes, bipolar junction transistor, power MOSFETs, thyristors, gate turn-off thyristors, insulated gate bipolar transistors. Classification of power electronics circuits. Line-frequency diode rectifiers: single-phase diode bridge rectifiers, voltage-doubler, effect of single-phase rectifiers on neutral currents in three-phase, three-phase rectifiers, inrush current and overvoltages at turn-on, concerns and remedies for line-current harmonics and low power factor. Line-frequency phase-controlled rectifiers and inverters: thyristor circuits and their control, single-phase converters, three-phase converters, other three-phase converters. Dc-ac inverters: single-phase inverters, three-phase inverters, switch mode inverters, effect of blanking time on output voltage in PWM inverters, rectifier mode of operation. Dc-dc converters: thyristor based dc-dc converters, control of dc-dc converters, step-down (buck) converter, step-up (boost) converter, buck-boost converter, Cuk dc-dc converter, full bridge dc-dc converter, introduction to resonant converters, dc-dc converter comparison. Static switches: single-phase static switches, three-phase static switches. Ac-ac converters: direct-switching frequency converters, the cycloconverter, phase modulation techniques, PWM ac-ac conversion, dc link converters, ac regulators.
