Course Goals (acquired competencies): Gaining basic knowledge and understanding of the common design requirements for practical switch mode power converters, the application specific integrated circuits for PWM control and the design program packages. Acquiring competence and skills to design, simulate , prototype and test switch-mode power supplies, as well as solving practical application problems.

Course Syllabus: Common requirements for switch mode power converters. AC line surge protection, Inrush control, Start-up methods, Soft-start circuits, Impulse-start circuits, Voltage overshoot protection, Undervoltage protection, Overload protection, Antisaturation techniques, Input and Output filters, Power failure warning circuits, Reducing transistor switching stress, Ripple-current ratings, Non-inductive current shunts, Selecting power components, Layout-techniques. Multiple output systems, Auxiliary supply systems, Direct-off-line converters, Self-oscillating converters, Constant-current power supplies, Switchmode variable power supplies, On-board power modules. Stability and control-loop compensation, Applying current-mode control, Magnetic duty-ratio control. Application specific integrated circuits. Power supplies design programs: PI-Expert, ResoCAD etc. Miscellaneous issues.
