Advanced Wireless Communications

Course Title: Advanced Wireless Communications

Code: ФЕИТ10013

ECTS points: 6 ECTS

Number of classes per week: 3+0+0+3

Lecturer: Prof. d-r Venceslav Kafedziski

Course Goals (acquired competencies): Upon finishing the course it is expected that the student will get familiar with the advanced techniques for wireless point-to-point and multiuser communication and their application to the existing and future wireless systems, be capable to design wireless systems, and be prepared to perform scientific work in the area of wireless communications.

Subject of the course content: Wireless channels: physical modeling of fading channels, fundamental parameters of fading channels, statistical fading models. Point to point systems: coherent and non-coherent detection, diversity techniques (time, frequency, space and macro-diversity). Cellular systems: multiple access techniques, TDMA, CDMA and OFDMA systems, interference management, frequency reuse, power control. Slow fading, outage probability and outage capacity. Fast fading and capacity of the fast fading channel, behavior in the high and low SNR region. Parallel channels in the time domain and in the frequency domain. Multiuser communications: capacity of the broadcast channel and capacity of the multiple access channel, multiuser diversity. MIMO communications: capacity of MIMO channels, modeling of MIMO channels, spatial multiplexing, and space time coding. Cooperative communications: relay channels and cooperative transmission strategies. Dynamic spectrum allocation and cognitive radio.
