Monitoring and Control of Electricity Distribution Systems

Course: Monitoring and Control of Electricity Distribution Systems

Code: 3ФЕИТ09012

ECTS points: 6 ECTS

Number of classes per week: 3+0+0+3

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Vesna Borozan

Course Goals (acquired competencies): Obtaining an academic and practical knowledge on the functions of monitoring and control of distribution power systems – detailed knowledge on the some of the most important functions and required technical preconditions for their application, as well as on the state-of-the-art conceptual solutions for demand side management of ICT equipped distribution networks and a liberalized market environment.

Course Syllabus: 1. Aims and objectives of the distribution system monitoring and control: General characteristics of the distribution systems; Needs for monitoring and control of distribution system operation; Needs for input data; Distribution management system (DMS). 2. DMS functions: Dispatching tool, including functions Network Topology Analysis, Switching Operations;  Load Flow; State Estimation; Fault Calculation; Optimal Reconfiguration; Load Restoration; Voltage Control; Reliability Analysis; Relay Protection Analysis; Under Load Switching. 3. Distribution System State Estimation: Algorithm for load estimation in distribution system with minimum information. 4. Distribution Network Reconfiguration: Algorithm for distribution network reconfiguration for loss minimization and load balancing; Algorithm for supply restoration. 5. Volt/Var Control: Algorithm for integrated (decentralized) Volt/Var control. 6. Distribution System Load Management: Load characteristics in distribution system, Load side management; Load management in smart distribution networks – Virtual power plant, Integration of electric vehicles and storage.
