Course Goals (acquired competencies): Obtaining knowledge for approach to solve problems in the power engineering using optimization methods .

Course Syllabus: Example problems in power engineering which need optimization: efficiency and consumption functions, optimization of hybrid systems etc. Classification and defining representation of optimization problems. Objective function and constraints. Classical methods for optimization used in power engineering: gradient methods, linear and non-linear programming. Multi-variable scalar functions in form of equations and non-equations, with and without constraints, used for power engineering, and their gradients. Global extremes search techniques: genetic algorithms, simulated annealing and other natural-inspired methods. Examples with optimization and application of Matlab Optimization Toolbox. Sensitivity analysis.
