Course goals/Competences: Introduction to the structure of computer systems: functions, characteristics and the standards used. Introduction to computer components and peripherals: their interdependence, connectivity and interaction.
Competencies: Knowledge of the structure of computer systems, their components and characteristics. Understanding the dependencies and interaction between the various components.

Curriculum: Performance and structure of computer systems. Desktop and server platforms. Motherboard: features and standards. Bus structure: bus standards (PCI, PCIExpress). Semiconductor memory: features, types and versions. Video subsystem: features, performance and video cards. Characteristics of computer graphics display. Secondary memory: warehouse, price, features of bus connection (SATA, eSATA, SAS). Portable data storage media (CD, DVD, external disk drives). Standard buses for connecting peripherals: parallel ports, serial ports, USB, IEEE 1394, PCMCIA, Thunderbolt etc.
