Computer controlled systems

Course title: Computer controlled systems

Code: FEIT01L014

Number of credits (ECTS): 6

Weekly number of classes: 2+2+1+0

Prerequisite for enrollment of the subject: None

Course goals/Competences: After passing the course, the student will gain knowledge for the basic aspects of computer control of processes, either using microcontroller, microprocessor, personal computer or industrial computer. In this course the student will apply the gained theoretical knowledge from the subject Control Systems Theory 1, Control Systems Theory 2 and Systems Theory. The basic goal of the course is learning and realizing the connection between the theoretical and practical aspects of computer control of systems. In this manner the student will become eligible to analyze and design the computer controller for certain system/process, considering both, hardware and software aspects.

Total available number of classes: 180

Curriculum: Basic concepts of computer control. Hardware and other technical aspects in computer controlled systems: Input and output of data in the process computer. Basic components in the control circuit. Software aspects in computer controlled systems: Real time control of processes; Interrupt control; Modes of activation of program blocks; Acting with interrupts; Computer control of complex systems; Initial approaches to system decomposition; Hierarchical control; Multilayer control; Multilevel control. Linear digital control. Discrete state space computer controlled systems: two-state computer controlled systems; Sequential systems. Examples for computer controlled systems: temperature control with microcontroller; Hierarchical control of kiln furnace for bricks.
