Course goals/Competences: Understanding of basics of digital image processing; evaluation of algorithms performance; usage of professional digital image processing tools; development and implementation of new simple tools (in MATLAB); following of courses "digital video systems" and "multimedia systems"

Curriculum: Basics of image representation and image processing. Analog image representation: 2D additive linear systems; LSV and LSI systems; homomorphic systems. Image digitization: 2D sampling and reconstruction; quantization; digitization of TV video signal. Image enhancement: contrast manipulation; histogram processing; image smoothing and sharpening. Discrete unitary transforms: 2D Fourier transform and its properties, Radon transform. Image enhancement in Fourier domain. Image restoration: degradation model, restoration goal, restoration of noisy images, restoration of LSI blurred images, restoration of geometrically degraded images. Color processing. Wavelets and multiresolution processing. Edge detection: gradient based methods, Laplacian based methods, edge linking. Morphological processing: basic concepts, dilation/erosion; opening/closing; boundary extraction; hole filling; extraction of connected components; thinning; thickening; skeletonisation. Image segmentation: threshold based segmentation; region based segmentation; segmentation based on morphological watersheds. Image compression: redundancy, fidelity criterions. Lossless compression: VL, LZW and BP-coding; predictive coding. Lossy compression: predictive coding; transform coding; compression standards.
