Prerequisite for enrollment of the subject: Basic Course of the Telecommunications

Course goals/Competences: The student will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of the standards for coding (compression) of video signals, the techniques of transmission of television signals over broadcasting satellite, cable and terrestrial systems and mobile cellular telecommunication systems and the IPTV, and will be able to work for any operator offering television services.

Curriculum: Introductory terms: broadcasting, radio and television signals, distribution methods, frequency bands, capacity. Principal approaches to video coding: MPEG2, MPEG4, H.264/AVC. MPEG transport streams. Modulation procedures for digital video broadcasting. Main standards for digital video broadcasting. Satellite digital video broadcasting: DVB-S. Cable digital video broadcasting: DVB-C. Terrestrial digital video broadcasting: DVB-T. DVB-T networks and their planning. Digital video broadcasting to mobile (handheld) devices: DVB-H. Digital video broadcasting in 3G and LTE (MBMS). Digital video broadcasting in WiMAX (MBS). IPTV. Internet television. Regulation of digital video broadcasting.
