Prerequisite for enrollment of the subject: Passed: Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering 1

Course goals/Competences: Main Objective of this module is obtaining the basic fundaments of Electric Power Devices.  Investigation of machines and power transformers in different modes of operations. Furthermore the course goal is to assist the students in getting the practical technical and professional competence for solving concrete engineering problems in the field of energy conversion, using of modern based microprocessor control techniques and impact on the energy quality. By studying this course student acquires the practical technical and professional competence for solving concrete engineering problems in the field of energy conversion especially of DC-, AC electrical machines and transformers.

Total available number of classes: 180

Curriculum: Principles of energy conversion. Fundaments of rotating electrical machines (motors and generators) and power transformers. Different types and models, practical considerations. Classification and construction of electrical machines and transformers. Equivalent circuits power losses, energy efficiency, and voltage and torque equations. Basic principles of testing methods for electric power devices. Speed and torque Control methods. Modelling and simulation of different electric power devices using MatLab-Simulink simulation tool package. Practical application. Smart high efficiency Electric Power devices and Voltage Quality. Fundamentals of speed and position control methods. Analysis and synthesis of the whole control loop using optimal PID based controller. Vector Control of induction motor (IM). Introduction and main principles of adaptive control methods, and observers based control techniques. Some practical test in laboratory will be demonstrated.
