Course goals/Competences: Obtaining professional knowledge about the role of electrical substations in the power system, basic elements, construction types and schemes of the main and auxiliary circuits in electrical substations. Capability for calculation of short circuit currents, mechanical and thermal short current strength and characteristics of the basic elements in the electrical substations.

Curriculum: Types of electrical substations. Voltages and currents in electrical substations. Faults types, symmetrical components and short circuits currents in electrical substations. Calculation of arbitrary currents for dimensioning of the equipment in electrical substations: peak short circuits currents, thermal short circuits currents and symmetrical breaking current. Heating of the conductors in normal operation. Forces and stresses in electrical substations. Mechanical and thermal dimensioning of the busbars. Elements in electrical substations. Electrical arc and circuit breakers. Other elements of electrical substations: power transformer, recloser, current measuring transformers, voltage measuring transformers, surge arresters, insulators, cables. Schemes of the major current circles.in electrical substations. Schemes of the auxiliary current circles in electrical substations. Grounding in electrical substations. Construction of the electrical substations,
