Course goals/Competences: Introduction to basic principles of power engineering and ways of getting energy from different energy resources. Basic concepts of technologies and means of transformation from one to another form of energy. Using the laws and ways of getting the energy and resolve complex modelling tasks in the field of energy, as well as a foundation for further learning materials for the subjects of Power Engineering Study program

Curriculum: Classification of energy forms. Primary forms of energy. Useful forms of energy. Basic concepts and units of measures for energy and power. Primary energy forms and classification. Fossil fuels (coal, crude oil and its derivatives, natural gas). Water supply, nuclear fuel, biomass and non-conventional energy sources as renewables. Transformation of primary forms in suitable form of energy. Transformation of chemical energy into heat and electrical energy. Heat exchange. First and second law of thermodynamics. Reversible and irreversible processes. Thermodynamic systems. Transformation of nuclear energy in heat and electrical energy. Nuclear reactions, fission reaction. Basic characteristics of nuclear power reactors and types of reactor fuel. Transformation of internal heat into mechanical energy. Transformation of mechanical energy into electrical energy. Electromechanical energy transformation. Immediate transformation into electricity. Thermal transformation, photoelectric transformation. Energy use, useful energy forms. Energy balances.
