Prerequisite for enrollment of the subject: Passed: Mathematics 1 and 2, Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering 1 and 2, Taken course: Mathematics 3, Theory of electrical circuits.
Course goals/Competences: Understanding the dangers of touch and step voltages in accordance with the national and international standards, as well as ability for calculation, dimensioning and designing groundings and grounding systems.

Curriculum: Introduction. Field of study. Basic characteristics of grounding and grounding systems in electric power networks. Modeling of earth electrodes. Mutual coupling in groundings. Numerical solution of a concentrated grounding. Application of software tools. Overhead lines as elements of a grounding system. Grounding of towers and substations for medium and high voltage. Typical grounding configurations and their characteristics. Impulse impedance. Model of a transmission line, approximate and detail modeling. Reduction factor. Power cables as elements of grounding systems. Models with distributed parameters with equivalent quadruplets. Reduction factor. Exported potential. Other types of concentrated groundings. Complex grounding systems in HV transmission networks. Calculation of the distribution of potentials and currents underground faults. Grounding systems of MV distribution networks, treatment of the neutral point, practical recommendations, and technical regulations. Modern numerical procedures for solving grounding systems.
