Course goals/Competences: Introduction to insulation of power system elements, properties, selection, design, exploitation and examination. Qualified for selection, maintenance and exploitation of insulation systems in factories producing high voltage equipment, power production companies, power distribution companies, and other industrial enterprises.

Curriculum: Introduction. Electric fields. Properties оf outside insulation. Ionization in gases. Sustaining and non-sustaining discharge. Discharges in homogeneous and non-homogeneous fields. Corona. Streamer discharge theory. Influence of the polarity of the electrodes in and non-homogeneous fields. Discharge at large distances. Statistical distribution breakdown voltages. Time to discharge. Corona in overhead transmission lines. Measures to combat the corona. Application of corona discharge. Electric arc. Discharge along the surface of solid insulation. Discharge in a strongly non-homogeneous field. Impact of pollution and humidity. External insulation of overhead lines and distribution facilities. Examples of insulators. Arrays of insulators. Selection of array insulators and the number of insulators in the array. Selection of distances in air insulation. Internal insulation. Breakdown in liquid dielectrics. Solid dielectrics as internal insulation. Thermal breakdown. Gas insulation. Vacuum insulation. Aging of the internal insulation. Partial discharges. Choosing the allowed values of working and test voltages. Major types of internal insulation. Important insulating systems. Examples for transformers, cables and electric machines.
