Course goals/Competences: Introduction to the characteristics of lightning as a source of an atmospheric overvoltage, surge protection of power facilities, substations and overhead lines, insulation coordination, methods of analysis, simulation and modeling, switching overvoltage and protection.

Curriculum: Introduction. Basic concepts and definitions. Field of study. Lightning a source of atmospheric overvoltage and its characteristics. Protection against direct strokes of lightning. Protection of buildings, overhead lines and power facilities. Propagation of waves in overhear/cable lines. Refraction and reflection of waves. Petersen’s rule. Spark gaps and surge arresters. Insulation coordination. Grounding and impulse resistance. Modeling. Protection of substations from traveling waves. Commutation overvoltage. Overvoltage caused by reactive elements and long lines switching. Application of Matlab/Simulink for overvoltage calculation. Modeling and calculations.
