Course goals/Competences: Learning principles of operation and technologies for multimedia systems; acquiring basic knowledge about requirements for contemporary multimedia systems and about problems connected to their design and implementation; building bases for further knowledge acquisition in this area.

Curriculum: Introduction and history of multimedia systems. Basic of computer graphics. Basics of audio processing and audio compression. Basics of image and video processing: image and video segmentation, image and video coding. Multimedia streaming (servers, synchronization), Quality of Service (QoS), Media-on-Demand, Interactive television. Content based retrieval in digital libraries: retrieval of multimedia data, audio, music, graphics, images and video. Basic principles of image and video databases, MPEG-7. Advanced multimedia techniques: automated speech recognition, context recognition in image and video, events detection in video.
