Prerequisite for enrollment of the subject: Basics of Telecommunications

Course goals/Competences: Students will get familiar with principles of operation of modern navigation systems. They will be capable to analyze and design a navigation systems.

Total available number of classes: 180

Curriculum: Historical overview of navigation systems. Definition of basic terms in navigation. Mathematical fundamentals needed in navigating. Propagation of radio waves. Surface waves. The influence of the ionosphere and troposphere to radio waves propagation. Principles for determining the position, velocity and attitude. Measures of accuracy of certain parameters. Maps and navigation coordinate systems. Ground navigation. Principles of operation of systems with a single source. Space based navigation systems. Hyperbolic navigation system Loran, Decca, Omega. Systems for aircraft guidance: VOR, DME, ILS, MLS. Principles of satellite navigation. Description of some satellite navigation systems Transit, NAVSTAR / GPS, GLONAS. Additional systems to improve the performance of the underlying systems for satellite navigation. Differential - GPS. The concept of multiple reference stations. Navigation based images. Inert navigation. Using inert sensors. Sensors to measure acceleration and rotation. Integration of satellite navigation systems (GNSS) and inert navigation systems. Use of navigation systems in everyday life.
