Prerequisite for enrollment of the subject: Fundamental of Electrical Engineering

Course goals/Competences: Introducing to the technology of electricity generation in nuclear power plants (NPP), and the development of nuclear energy in the world. Opportunity for comparative analysis with other technologies for electricity generation, including the calculations for analysis of the development of sources in the power system.

Total available number of classes: 180

Curriculum: Transformation of nuclear energy in internal caloric energy. Nuclear reactions and fission reaction. Characteristics of nuclear reactors and thermal power reactors, components of the active zone and its function, nuclear fuel. Design features of the reactor components and nuclear fuel. NPP with PWR- type of reactor. Reactor buildings – containment. Material types and their characteristics used for fuel, coolant, moderator, structures in the active zone, radiation protection. Kinetics and dynamics of the nuclear reactor. Stationary and dynamic modes of reactor operation. Modeling the safety systems of nuclear power plant (active and passive types). Heat transfer between fuel element and coolant, and spatial distribution of temperature in the fuel channel. Characteristics of steam generator, distribution of temperatures of the primary and secondary medium. Optimization of the temperature operating conditions. Principles of satisfying safety design and operation of reactor. Systematization and classification of the faults. Radiation doses and radiation protection in the NPP. Site selection of NPP, water needs for cooling, connection to the grid and to the power system and environmental effects. Types of modern nuclear power reactors: light water APWR, ABWR and heavy water types CANDU, and developing new technologies reactors as gas cooled reactors.
