Course goals/Competences: The student will be able to plan and design contemporary optical networks. Also student will get knowledge of procedures to improve survivability of optical networks, and for services that are provided over optical networks.

Total available number of classes: 180

Curriculum: History of optical networks, services, comparison of the technologies (concurrent technologies), WDM architectures, optical layer, OTDM architectures, evolution of the optical networks. SDH, Next Generation SDH, Data over Optics, OTN, 1/10 GB Ethernet, MPLS. Optical Networks Survivability. Optical Rings. Wavelength routing networks. Conversion of wavelengths. All-optical networks. GPON, BPON, EPON. Photonic packet communications. Deployment of optical networks.
