Course goals/Competences: Obtaining professional knowledge on the process and criteria for planning operation and construction of new power system facilities depending on the time horizon of planning. Learning the methods for internal optimization of the operation of hydro and thermal power plants, as well as models for optimal operation of power plants in a complex power system in new market environment,

Curriculum: Time decomposition of the planning process. Mathematical methods in the power system sector: nonlinear programming, dynamic programming. Power characteristics of the electric power plants. Operational maps of power plants.G464 Approximated power characteristics of thermal and hydro power plants. Determination of the expected production of electricity from reservoir hydro power plant. Production planning from cascaded hydro power plants. Optimal operation of power plants in a complex power system in new market environment. Investments for construction of power plants. Methods for long-term expansion planning, uncertainties, assumptions, simulations. Methods for determination of expected production of electricity and costs for thermal power plants (combinations of units, equivalent curves and method of cumulants). Calculation of the reliability parameters: ENS (Energy Not Served) and LOLP (Loss of load probability). Characteristics and requirements from power system facilities in the new deregulated electricity market environment. Preventive maintenance of power facilities and planning of the repairs.
