Course goals/Competences: Getting knowledge of processes and methods for electricity generation from classical energy sources: thermal power plants and hydro power plants. Obtaining knowledge for the role, importance and components of substations, as well as ability for component sizing.

Curriculum: Primary and transformed energy forms. Thermal power plants. Main technological diagram and main elements in thermal power plants. Efficiency coefficient of thermal power plants. Methods for improvement of the thermal efficiency coefficient. Optimal power allocation between the elements of thermal power plants. Supplemental facilities in thermal power plants. Types of hydro power plants and their main components. Energy conversion processes in the hydro power plants. Types and selection of hydraulic turbines. Schematic diagrams for self-consumption and different types of power plants. Types of substations. Calculation of the relevant currents for equipment sizing in substations: impulse, thermal and switching short circuit current. Heating of conductors in normal operation. Forces and stresses in substations. Elements in substations. Mechanical and thermal sizing of busses. Schematic diagrams of the main circuits in substations. Grounding of substations. Present structure solutions of substations.
