Power Plant & System Operation

Course title: Power Plant & System Operation

Code: FEIT04L014

Number of credits (ECTS): 6

Weekly number of classes: 3+2+0+0

Prerequisite for enrollment of the subject: Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering 2

Course goals/Competences: Study of methodologies for calculation of various operation modes of hydro power plants (HPP) and thermal power plants (TPP). Planning the energy resources for optimal operation of power system. Methods and methodologies for solving the problems of power plants operation.

Total available number of classes: 180

Curriculum: Presentation of electric power consumption through a chronological load diagram and the load duration curve. Defining a constant and a variable part of the electric power consumption (base and peak load). Modeling of fossil fuel thermal power plants. Energy characteristics and cost characteristics of power plants for different technologies and different types of fossil fuels. Determination of schedule for maintenance in thermal power plants. Modeling of hydro power plants (storage and run-of-river). Operating modes of hydro power plants in terms of hydrological conditions and reservoir possibilities. Solving hydraulic systems and modeling of cascade connected hydro power plants. Generator and pump operation mode of reversible hydro power plants. Balancing the total and variable consumption and balancing the power and electrical energy in the power system. Water balancing for a certain period in hydro power plants, and the balance between inflow and discharge water, restriction regime of charging and discharging of the reservoirs in terms of installed turbine water flow and limited water volume. Opportunities for power and electrical energy exchange with other power systems, limitations in terms of technical capabilities in thermal power plants. Techniques and methods for solving multidimensional problems of the power system operation.
