Prerequisite for enrollment of the subject: Passed: High voltage networks and systems, Taken course: Analysis of stationary regimes in power system.
Course goals/Competences: Understanding the principles of exploitation of power system and the role of individual generators in the power system operation in terms of power flows, voltage and transmission capabilities. Ability for calculations and preparation of studies in the field of power system operation.

Curriculum: Power systems operation. Characteristics of consumption and load in power systems. Daily load diagrams and their approximation. Prediction of annual needs of power and energy. Basic characteristics of electric power plants. Role of electric power plants in the system for power balance: thermal and hydro plants, renewable sources of energy. Modeling of transmission networks. DC model. Direct relation between the branch and generator powers. Optimal operation of a power system consisting of power plants and transmission network modeled with the DC model. System operation in conditions of insufficient production and transmission capacities. Interconnection of power systems. Safety criteria for the operation of transmission networks. Power Transfer Distribution Factors. The general problem of economic dispatching. Economic dispatching of power plants - optimization with constraints. Influence of the transmission network. Optimal power flow and voltage regulation. FACTS devices in power systems. Unit commitment problem with and without transmission network - relaxed Lagrange method and genetic algorithms. Operation of power plants in systems with limited fuel supplies. Coordination of power system consists of thermal and hydro power plants. Voltage stability in power systems. Application of software tools in MATLAB to solve optimization problems in power system. Software package MATPOWER (open source). Use of application software packages (Power World, DIgSILENT, and PSS/E). Probabilistic simulation of the power system operation.
