Course goals/Competences: Introduction to basic properties of electromagnetic waves in free space and guided electromagnetic waves. Introduction and development of procedures for the analysis of systems for electromagnetic radiation. Analysis and solving methods for a range of practical problems related with propagation of electromagnetic waves and electromagnetic radiation.

Curriculum: Basic properties of plane waves in homogeneous and ideal dielectric. Planar waves in poor conducting medium. Group velocity. Penetration of waves in conductors. Reflection and transmission of waves. Propagation in homogeneous ionized medium. Propagation in continuous inhomogeneous medium. Computer simulation of propagation of plane waves through inhomogeneous medium. Hertz dipole. Near zone and the radiation zone. Field in the radiation zone of randomly distributed currents. Ground influence. Linear antenna. Radiation characteristics, radiation resistance and amplification of the antenna. Receiving antenna. Antenna arrays, their analysis and modeling. Computer simulation of radiation characteristics of the antenna and antenna systems.
