Course goals/Competences: The student will be able to plan and design fixed wireless systems with implementation of quality standards. The student will gain knowledge of modern satellite communications and services.

Curriculum: History of radio communications. Radio link components. Frequency bands allocation. Radio channel models. Open space waves propagation. Radio link budget calculation. ITU recommendations for microwave link design. Diversity and combiners. Modulation techniques in wireless communication systems. BER calculation in fading environment. Terrain and obstacle influence in wave propagation. Point-to-point wireless system design. Point-to-multipoint wireless system design (WLL – wireless local loop). Satellite communications. Satellite links characteristics. Power budget calculations. Satellite systems for multiple access (FDMA, TDMA, Aloha, CDMA). VSAT systems. Mobile satellite services (GEO and non-GEO). GPS.
