Course goals/Competences: Introducing the faults that occur in the power system, and ways to protect the individual elements of the power system. Study of various systems of relay protection. Methods for solving problems of optimum operation of power plants and facilities, and ways of solving the relay protection in the power facilities.

Curriculum: Statistical data processing of measuring values for the purposes of relay protection. Introduction to the types of relays (electromechanical, static and electronic, digital). Getting the measuring values. Connecting the protective relays for testing and measurement. Characteristics of current and voltage instrument transformers. Characteristic testing of the primary relay for overcurrent protection. Schemes of connecting filters to obtain the required measuring values in the relay protection. Overcurrent protection with independent and dependent characteristics. Directional protective relays. Differential protection. Differential Protection of Power Transformers. Introduction to software packages for simulation of relay protection. Distant protection for transmission lines. Simulation of various types of protective relays. Simulation of differential protection and distant protection. Protection of generators. Protection of power transformers. Simulation of differential protection of power transformers. Protection of busbars and protection of electric motors. Advanced systems of relay protection in the power system. Introduction to advanced digital systems of relay protection.
