Course goals/Competences: The student will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of main building components of contemporary optical communication networks, hybrid fiber-coaxial networks, digital subscriber line, multiservice platforms, as well as practical knowledge of techniques for measurement of their performances.

Total available number of classes: 180

Curriculum: Transport characteristics of optical fibers, attenuation and dispersion. Light sources. Light detectors. Passive optical components (couplers, splices, connectors, filters, wavelength multiplexers/de-multiplexers). Optical amplifiers. Noise and detection. Error probability calculation. Optical switches. Fiber optics system design. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM and DWDM). Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) networks, DOCSIS. Passive Optical Networks (PON), GEPON, GPON. Fiber to the Home and QoS. Transmission media for electrical signals.  xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technologies. DSL modulation basis and architecture. DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer). Communication services implementation over DSL, multiservice platforms.
