Course Goals (acquired competencies): The main purpose of this course is to upgrade student's knowledge for power converters, as well as to introduce them to practical work and application of converters in different areas of power engineering, automation and renewable energy sources through novel laboratory exercises. They will be also introduced to the novel techniques of modelling and computer simulations of frequently used converters. With this course students will gain competences for practical use of power converters in different areas of electrical engineering and their computer modelling, simulation and analysis.

Course Syllabus: Computer modelling and simulation of power converters. Transformers for rectifiers. Power converters harmonics and their influence on the quality of electricity. Active and passive filters. Snubber circuits. Three phase current and voltage inverters. Techniques for pulse width modulation for three phase inverters. Resonant inverters. Uninterrupted power supplies. Power converters for novel AC and DC motor control. Power converters in renewable energy sources. Power converters for high voltage DC transmission. Power converters in standard and electric/hybrid vehicles. Power converters for power quality improvement.
