Course Goals (acquired competencies): Introduction to the principles of operation and design of optical links. Obtaining theoretical and practical knowledge of the components from which modern optical links and networks are built, hybrid optical-coaxial networks, digital subscriber lines, as well as practical knowledge for measuring their performance.

Course Syllabus: Transmission characteristics of optical fiber, attenuation and dispersion. Light sources and receivers. Passive optical components (couplers, splitters, connectors, filters, bin-length multiplexers). Optical amplifiers. Noise and detection. Error probability. Optical switches. Design of optical communication systems. Wavelength Division Multipelxing (WDM and DWDM). Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial Networks HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax), DOCSIS. Passive optical networks, GPON, NG-PON. FTTH - Fiber to the home: design and quality of services. xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technologies. VDSL, VDSL vectoring technology. Services deployment over xDSL.
