Course Goals (acquired competencies): Acquisition of expert knowledge for tasks, process and criteria for planning the construction of power facilities depending on the time horizon and in funcion of the development of the power system. Obtaining knowledge about methods for optimial operation of Hydro Power Plants and Thermal Power Plants, as well as for models for optimal operation of power plants in a complex power system.

Course Syllabus: Main tasks, objectives, features, requirements and challenges in Development of Power System in new market environment. Optimization methods in power engineering: nonlinear programming. Energy characteristics of TPP and HPP. Internal optimization of HPP operation. Optimal operation of transformer stations. Dynamic programming and its application for determining the expected production of electricity from hydroelectric power plants. Models for optimal operation of power plants in a complex power system - objective function, constraints, problem solving. Operation charts of turbo and hydro generators. Methods for long-term planning, uncertainty, assumptions, simulations. Methods for determining the expected production and costs of thermal power plants - method of combinations of the units, method of equivalent curves. Calculation of the reliability parameters (ENS and LOLP) for power system. Structure of costs, cost-benefit analysis and ways of financing the construction of power facilities. Sensitivity analysis.
