Course Goals (acquired competencies): The course is designed to equip students for active use of German in science settings by developing their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills.

Course Syllabus:
a) Study-specific topical reading materials
b) Lexical, morphological and syntactic elements:
- Words: structure, word group, word formation (derivation, compounding)
- Terminology: domestic, international, loan words, polysemantic terminology (specific, idiomatic, metaphorical, etc.), Greek and Latin roots
- Word groups: verbs, (personal/impersonal verb forms), nouns, adjectives and adverbs
- Word groups and sentences: simple, compound, dependent clauses
c) Introduction to basics of academic writing: note-taking, paragraph writing, comparisons, cause and effect relationships, giving instructions, formal letters, applications, CV writing
d) Additional student activities:
- presentations of individual and group projects
