Course Goals (acquired competencies): Acquiring knowledge about the possible dangers of high voltages and currents and providing conditions for electro-safety in power facilities. The capability for calculation and design of complex grounding systems and assessing the risk of accidents in power plants, electrical substation and other industrial facilities.

Course Syllabus: Fatal electrical current, electric shock, and regulations for permitted step and touch voltage. Direct and indirect touch. The human body as part of a electrical circle, ventricular fibrillation threshold. Methods for calculating the parameters of single and complex grounding systems in a single-layered and two-layered environment. Discharge of potentials from power plants. Design and construction of grounding in power plant and electrical substations. Risk zones and models for calculating the risk of accidents in power plants and electrical substations. Methods for measuring and determining the soil  resistance. Treatment of the neutral point in the electrical networks. Energy installations and protective measures in industrial plants in an environment with explosive atmosphere. Protection against atmospheric discharges in power plants. Measures for protection against dangerous contact voltage and step in power plants. Technical and organizational measures for electro-safety in the power facilities. Risk matrix and risk assessment.
