Course Goals (acquired competencies): Introduction to specific standards and devices for wired and wireless networking. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to independently design and connect network devices to a computer network and to configure them.

Course Syllabus: Network repeater and hub. LAN topologies. Methods for practical realization of Ethernet LANs. Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections. Media access control in Ethernet LANs. CSMA/CD. Network bridge and algorithms for the transparent creation of network of devices. Collision domains. Network switch. Introduction to STP protocol. Configuring virtual LANs. Wireless LANs. IEEE 802.11 set of protocols. CSMA/CA medium access control in wireless LANs. Configuring and accessing wireless networks. ARP and RARP protocols. Address translation. IP addressing. Network router. Interior design and architecture. Broadcast domains. Forwarding and routing packets. Routing tables and forwarding tables. Configuring the router. Routing algorithms: distance-vector and link-state. Finding the shortest path with the Dijkstra's algorithm. Creating link-state databases. Routing protocols. RIP, OSPF, BGP.
