Course Goals (acquired competencies): The student will gain in-depth knowledge of the existing and forthcoming optical networking technologies and standards. The student will be capable of planning and designing modern optical networks by getting knowledge about the services that are realized through optical networks.

Course Syllabus: Generations of optical networks, services, comparison of technologies (competitive technologies), WDM architectures. Optical level, development of optical networks. SDH, Next Generation SDH, 1/10/40/100 Gb Ethernet, Carrier Ethernet. MPLS / GMPLS. OTN - standard. OTN Framework structure. Design of WDM networks. WDM FTTH - fiber to the home. NG-PON, WDM-PON. Photonic packet switching, switching to optical packets and bursts. All optical networks. Case studies. Optimization of wavelengths, multilayer traffic optimization IP / MPLS / WDM. Techno-economic analysis.
