Biography:

Dr. Zoran Hadzi-Velkov is born in Skopje. He received the Dipl. Ing. (honors), M.Sc. (honors), and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia, in 1996, 2000, and 2003, respectively. In 1996, he joined the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. He currently holds the position of Professor in telecommunications at this University.

During 2001 and 2002, on leave from the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Dr. Hadzi-Velkov was a visiting scientist at the International Business Machines (IBM) T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY, where he was engaged in optical communications. He has also been a visiting researcher at several renowned European universities.

Publications of Dr. Hadzi-Velkov have appeared in the most renowned international journals in telecommunications, such as IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Communications Letters, and IEEE Transaction on Wireless Communications.

Dr. Hadzi-Velkov has served on the technical program committees (TPC) of numerous major international conferences in telecommunications, including the flagship conferences IEEE ICC and the IEEE GLOBECOM.

His current research interests include cooperative communications, energy-efficient (green) communications, and radio channel characterization and modeling.

Dr. Hadzi-Velkov is a Senior Member of the IEEE. Since April 2012, he is the Chair of the Republic of Macedonia IEEE ComSoc Chapter.

Dr. Hadzi-Velkov is the recipient of the UKIM Best Scientist Award for the year 2013.

Dr. Hadzi-Velkov is a Humboldt Fellow. He was awarded the Humboldt fellowship for experienced researchers by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation in 2012.

From October 2012  until January 2014, Dr. Hadzi-Velkov was a visiting professor at the Institute for Digital Communications (Chair: Prof. Robert Schober), University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany.

Since January 2012, Dr. Hadzi-Velkov is an Editor for the IEEE COMMUNICATIONS LETTERS.

  • Return Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2014)
  • UKIM Best Scientist Award for the Year 2013 (2014). Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje confers this award annually for scientific achievements of its academic staff
  • Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2012). The fellowship is awarded to international researchers from all scientific disciplines in recognition to their scientific achievements
  • Chapter Achievement Award for the Republic of Macedonia ComSoc Chapter (2014). The IEEE Communications Society has conferred the 2014 Chapter Achievement Award for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region to the Macedonia ComSoc Chapter. Prof. Zoran Hadzi-Velkov has been the Chair of Macedonia ComSoc Chapter in the mandate period 2012-2015

News

  • March 14, 2011: Nikola Zlatanov is the laureate of the Young Scientist Award for the Year 2010, which is awarded by the President of the Republic of Macedonia. He obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees in wireless communications from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies, both under supervision of prof. dr. Zoran Hadzi-Velkov.

  • August 1, 2012: Dr. Hadzi-Velkov receives the Humboldt Fellowship for experienced researchers. The fellowship is awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation for previous scientific achievements in all scientific disciplines, and is aimed at sponsoring research stays at German universities.
  • February 6, 2014: Dr. Hadzi-Velkov receives the UKIM Best Scientist Award for the Year 2013. This award is conferred annually to the top ten scientists affiliated with the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.
  • 11 June 2015: Dr. Nikola Zlatanov has accepted a Lecturer position at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Nikola Zlatanov has obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees at FEIT/UKIM under supervision of Prof. Hadzi-Velkov (currently close collaborators)
